November 17 - 20, 2011

Winnipeg, Manitoba

Since its inception in 1993, the National Business School Conference (NBSC) has grown to be one of the most prestigious conferences for Business Schools across the country. The Commerce Students’ Association (CSA) of the Commerce Undergraduate program at the University of Manitoba took it upon themselves to create such a conference.

Break-out Sessions

NBSC’s solid foundation of break-out sessions is the key benefit for all councils attending, as delegates have now experienced many new situations, yet can still leave a significant impact during their year. Delegates are placed in intimate groups and with the guidance of experienced moderators, discuss issues and ideas to better their councils.

Each session will be one hour and fifteen minutes, with the exception of the President’s session, JDC West session, and the CABS semi-annual general meeting. Session topics are outlined below

Council Public Relations

Forming a strong relationship with the local business community gives current

students a chance to better prepare themselves for the future. As the student leaders it

is our responsibility to provide opportunities for students and professionals to make

these connections. This session will discuss approaches to forming long-term

relationships with companies, as well as school administration and the media.

Branding Your Council

11/18/2011 at 09:30AM 1 hour 15 minuets

Not only is it important for councils to develop an identity year to year, it is also

important to develop a unique culture in the long term. Having a streamlined image can

help with all aspects of your council, from marketing events to recruiting new students.

This session will focus on branding strategies (whether it’s a complete re-brand or just a

small tweak), and how to use this brand for marketing your council and events.

Motivating Your Council

11/18/2011 at 09:30AM 1 hour 15 minuets

Motivating employees has always been a challenging aspect of being a manager.

Motivating student volunteers on a council is just as hard – if not harder because they

don’t get paid! As executive council members your must find creative ways to empower

and motivate your councils for the entire school year. This breakout session will bring

out new ideas to motivate your council to reach new heights!

Building on Past and Present Councils

11/19/2011 at 09:30AM 1 hour 15 minuets

An inevitable part of any student council is the turnover every year. In order for a

council to be sustainable in the long-term, one must plan for the future. This includes

executives, council structure and strategy. In this session, delegates will discuss how

the past and present can be used for future council success. It’s like the old saying, “If it

ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

The Hook, Line and Sinker of Selling Your Council

11/19/2011 at 09:30AM 1 hour 15 minuets

It's a problem that many tight-knit student councils deal with: the idea of the

council being a "clique" that is not open or outgoing towards students not on council.

Your council must find ways to be as outgoing and friendly as possible to all students -

after all; the end goal is for your council to provide services to the general student body.

This session will discuss any specific issues that your council deals with in this area,

and attempt to come up with solutions and strategies to improve relationships with the

general student body.

Internal Conflict Prevention and Resolution

11/19/2011 at 09:30AM 1 hour 15 minuets

We all know it: most business students have the "type A" personality, which is

great for getting things done - but sometimes it can cause personalities to clash. No

matter how well your council gets along, there will always be some conflict between

people. The best way to deal with it is to plan ahead for it and have strategies to deal

with it when it happens. The objective of this session is to give delegates new tactics for

dealing with internal conflict on their council
